On 26 March 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced the “landmark” $48 billion package to tide Singapore through the “unprecedented” Covid-19 crisis.
One of the key focuses of this budget was supporting jobseekers through a troubled hiring climate, expressed in two new initiatives – an SGUnited Traineeships programme and an SGUnited Jobs Initiative that aims to create about 10,000 jobs over the next one year. The initiative also seeks to help businesses that are recruiting for the eventual recovery, as well as those with short-term manpower needs due to disruptions in labour supply.
SGUnited Jobs Initiative
The SGUnited Jobs initiative started with a recently-concluded career fair that recruited both for long-term roles in the public service and sectoral partner institutions, in areas such as social services, early childhood education, and ICT; and short-term, temporary jobs to handle the increase in COVID-19 related operations, such as health declaration assistants, temporary management support officers, and the Transport Ambassadors.
The public sector took the lead, in planning manpower needs early and accelerating hiring to provide opportunities to jobseekers in this time.

SGUnited Traineeships Programme
For those just entered the job market, such as graduating polytechnic and university students, Workforce Singapore (WSG) will co-share manpower costs with enterprises that offer traineeships targeted at local first-time jobseekers this year.
This will support up to 8,000 traineeships this year, across both large and small enterprises, focusing on science and technology traineeships in R&D labs, deep-tech startups, accelerators, and incubators.
