Statistics from the Ministry of Manpower have shown that total employment in the construction sector grew by 12,800 in 2019, based on preliminary estimates. The increase of 12,800 is welcome news after three years of decline.
Unfortunately, the construction sector is currently bracing for possible missed deadlines due to its high foreign population, many of which were affected by travel restrictions and quarantine measures in the wake of the novel coronavirus spread. Some workers are stuck in mainland China or away from work, while others have been placed under quarantine.
Overall, total employment rose by 55,200 for the whole year, speeding up from the 38,300 rise in the previous year.
The sector that saw the most growth was the service industry, including community, social and personal services, professional services and information and communications. In the meantime, the manufacturing and wholesale trade industries experienced a decrease in total employment, as a result of more difficult economic conditions that created caution in hiring.
