Ode To A Secretary

It’s time to show some appreciation to your overworked administrators during Secretaries’ Week!

Happy Secretaries’ Week!

Contrary to popular belief, this special week wasn’t dreamt up by enterprising florists wanting to cash in on the guilt of bosses. Instead, it was dreamt up by the creative folks at Young & Rubicam to help bump up the declining numbers of admin workers in America many years ago. Today, secretaries’ week is celebrated by admin staff worldwide. It is a time when admin staff get to receive the due recognition they deserve for ensuring that an organisation is well-oiled and for supporting an organisation’s day-to-day operations.

So, bosses, it’s time to show your administrative employees/secretaries some love, be it in the form of a good meal or some good ol’ chocolates. You could even pen them a heartfelt note of appreciation. Granted, you may be used to having your secretary craft your admin-related emails, but it would most certainly be nice for them to be on the receiving end of a good email once in a while. Here’s a template of how we envision a heartfelt email to an admin staff would be – just fill in the appropriate blanks!

Dear _______,

Thank you for having my back all these years. I’m unable to express in words my gratitude for your hard work. Without you, I wouldn’t be able to plan meetings for myself, understand the meeting agenda just minutes before it starts, or even remember the birthdays of my children. It is remarkable how I even remember where I like my coffee from, though.

Without you, the company would be a mess. We will not know where any of the files are kept, or who to call when we run out of water in the dispenser. We won’t even know how to operate the wonky office copier machine – it has come to my attention that you are in possession of the intricate knowledge of making it come to life through a complex series of hitting and kicking.

Speaking of, it is time to get a new copier machine. Could you work on that before lunch? While you’re at it, could you also book a lunch appointment for the both of us tomorrow, since it’s Secretaries’ Week?

Thanks!

Signed,
