How to Write a Resume for a Healthcare Position

The Covid-19 outbreak has shone a spotlight on healthcare like never before. So, if you are in search of a healthcare position, be it nurse, therapist, or social worker, you may be wondering how best to write your resume to highlight your skillset.

The fact is, not all resume templates work for all resumes. A software programmer may emphasise his or her mastery of programming languages, while a customer service manager would focus on measurable goals and sales targets achieved.

So, what goes into a compelling resume for a healthcare position?

1. Get a good resume layout!

Make sure your resume displays all the relevant information prominently, in an easy-to-read format. If design isn’t your strong suit (no shame in that), sites like Canva and Wix have thousands of templates for every kind of resume. Simply pick one you like!

2. Start with your relevant licenses, qualifications and certifications.

Most healthcare jobs have prerequisites in terms of certificates, courses or diplomas. Make sure to list these first to ensure that you have the basics covered.For example, a pharmacist would need a Degree in Pharmacy, and to be registered in the Singapore Pharmaceutical Council.

3. List your educational background.

Like the aforementioned Degree in Pharmacy, make sure you list your relevant educational background. Also important are the details – when did you complete your diploma or degree, where did you learn, what kind of programme did you undertake. This information will give your potential employer a good idea of your competencies and knowledge.

4. Include details about any major achievements.

Make sure to note down any achievements or awards you have. Even something as common as “Nurse of the Year” makes a difference, as it shows your commitment to your patients and how you stood out compared to your colleagues.

5. Include relevant specialisations.

Do you have an in-depth understanding of a particular field, such as radiography or dental care? Or maybe you handled many elderly patients in your previous position, and thus learnt to communicate with patience and empathy. Mention these skills and areas of expertise that will help you stand out from other applicants.
However, do make sure the resume is relevant to the particular job for which you are applying. Listing unrelated skills will only add clutter to the resume.

6. Proofread the resume before sending. Make sure your contact information is correct.

This goes without saying, no matter the position. Reread your resume for errors, and make sure all your contact information is up-to-date.
