Giving Millennials More than Just a Job

Recruiting and retaining the millennials: in this post, we discuss how to offer millennials more than just a job.

Born between 1980s to 2000s, millennials across exhibit similar traits and characteristics in the workplace. Understanding their traits will allow you to ready a holistic plan for recruit and retention, but do not overlook that millennials are no longer looking for just a job.

Having one of the highest GDP per capita in the world, millennials of Singapore are becoming increasingly affluent by relying on their parents, and less anxious of their ‘rice bowl’. Some take months or even more to hunt for that perfect dream job, others leave once they realise the job is not as perfect as they imagined.

To overcome this, organisations and HR professionals must recognize that millennials are looking for more than just a job. They want to attach meaning to their work.

My supervisor once conveyed her vision to us – as part of CareerBuilder Singapore, a company that connects employers with job seekers, we bring hope to people. This instills a sense of purpose among us and allows us to see value in our work.

Paint the vision of the company with millennials and remind them that their work makes a difference – be it in the organisation, or the society at large. Only then will they strive alongside with you towards your vision and goals.

Give millennials more than just a job and it will not be impossible to work with them.
